If baseball--important baseball--is on TV every night, and if I find myself spending the time I'm not writing letters and reviews wondering how I am going to finish all the letters and reviews I have to write, then it must be October.
For such activities--especially the bureaucratic, emcomiastic writing--I have come up with a verby-word: "octobering." (Ah, the gerund, a post for another day, perhaps in November.) For the next 26 days, octobering is what I will be doing.

In my experience, April is also a really crazy month. October is the April of fall semester.

true. they are not congruent in their places in the semester, but what we have is month that the academic year really gets underway, and the month just before it starts to wrap up.

For years I have thought of the period between September and November as "letter-writing season." How about another verb: "letter-of-wrecking." The pun is not to be taken literally, of course.

Happy Octobering. On my end, it's job marketing. And all of us a'marketing appreciate all of the Octobering that all y'all do.
How's THAT for a sentence?
