via Flavia, whose blog handle always makes me think of Flavor Flav (yeah, boy!), this is a fun little meme wherein one unearths one's earliest amazon purchases. Mine were *twelve and a half* years ago, at a time eerily close to when I was preparing for my comprehensive exams.
I placed my first Amazon order on November 24, 1997 for three books:
Sarah Pomeroy's Goddesses, Whores, Wives, and Slaves: Women in Classical Antiquity, and two titles by George Kennedy, A New History of Classical Rhetoric and Classical Rhetoric and Its Christian and Secular Tradition from Ancient to Modern Times. The Pomeroy title shipped on November 25; the Kennedy books on the 26th.
In 1998, I went on a Pindar kick, a Sophist kick, a Yo La Tengo kick, and a Sonic Youth/Thurston Moore kick. 1999, my dissertation-writing year has more music (lots of Low and Massive Attack) than books (more stuff on the sophists, some Aristotle). This is a consumerist picture of me trying to maintain balance and my sanity.
