Today I walked with John to campus to finish up grading for my undergraduate courses and to pick up the remaining seminar papers so I can have a blissful day of reading tomorrow. I checked my departmental mailbox, and the contents, for a change, were varied and somewhat interesting:
1. a library book I requested
2. a form a graduate student needs me to sign
3. a late paper from an undergrad, with no staple
4. a list of the latest publications from U of Minnesota Press (where, I thought in passing, it just might be colder than it is here).
5. a renewal notice for my membership in Rhetoric Society of America
This last item was somewhat intriguing, because even though the renewals are sent from the RSA home office in Utah, they all bear the name of the RSA Membership Officer, who cheerfully encourages members to renew soon, and they all feature the Membership Officer's institutional address as the place to mail renewal checks. Funny thing is, the new membership officer of RSA is yours truly. So if I mailed the check, it would be to me, D. Hawhee, and if all went well with the postal delivery, the check would end up in the same mailbox as the renewal form. Zany.
Luckily the form also has information about paying with a credit card online. I urge all RSA members to take advantage of this handy high-tech feature. I for one am going to save D. Hawhee some legwork.
